New McLennan County Drug Discount Card Saves Residents at Annual Rate of $289,000 Since April Debut
The New “BetterRxCard” also announced expansion to include county employers
Waco, TX, June 7, 2010 – BetterRxCard, the newest, free prescription discount card program approved for residents by the McLennan County Commissioner’s Court, today announced the program has already helped 875 McLennan County residents save at a rate of $289,000 annually since launching in late April.
Users of the discount card averaged $21.09 in monthly savings per prescription and used the free service at 24 of the 30 county pharmacies that support the card including Wal-Mart, CVS and Target, as well as independent pharmacies such as Lynn’s La Vega Pharmacy, Pharmacy Plus and Recept Pharmacy among others. The average BetterRxCard savings per prescription was 41%, but several transactions eclipsed the 90% mark; $398 was the most saved on a single prescription. The most popular prescriptions in McLennan County, sorted by average discount, are noted in Table 1 below.
BetterRxCard users of the exclusive co-pay cost reduction feature, called EquivaMeds, that is included for free to McLennan County residents, identified a monthly saving average of $73.16 or nearly 3.5 times more than the discount card itself.
“We are happy with our decision to provide residents a choice in prescription discount cards. Together, the existing NACo card and the new BetterRxCard are achieving our goal of providing more savings options for more residents.” said Eva Cruz, Health Services Director for McLennan County.
Genuity Group, the Florida-based firm that manages the BetterRxCard program for the county, also announced today that it is expanding the program to include employers. “Even with the insurance option some companies provide, no drug plan covers all prescription medications. That leaves many with no option but to pay full price at the pharmacy,” said David Smith, program director. “By providing these free cards, employers can proactively demonstrate they are interested in helping employees and their families improve their overall health.”
BetterRxCard was approved by the Commissioner’s Court in April and provides savings averaging more than 40% on prescription drugs. Cards are available at over 50 card pickup locations around the county. A complete list of participating pharmacies and card pick-up locations, as well as additional information about the program is available at www.McLennanCountyDrugCard.com. Additionally, Genuity Group has set up a new, local number (254-523-9218) to make it easier for residents – and employers that wish to participate in the free employers program – to make inquires.
