Boerne, TX, April 14, 2011 – BetterRxCard, a free prescription discount card program, was launched today throughout Kendall County, Texas. The discount program, approved by the Commissioner’s Court in February, is free for county residents and provides an average of $28 in savings per prescription per month. The card program is uniquely designed to assist both uninsured and insured residents in lowering prescription drug costs. 

Prescription discount cards like this are most often used by people that do not have insurance for one or more of their medications.  The program partners with pharmacies that agree to discounts for cardholders. Kendall County’s BetterRxCard program anticipates finding a savings for cardholders about 80% of the time.  Most any prescription that a physician would write is eligible for a discount and the BetterRxCard discount averages 40% off the retail price. The card may also be used on many pet medications.

Many county pharmacies, including Walmart, Walgreens, and HEB, participate in the program. BetterRxCard may be used at these and nearly 400 other pharmacies in the adjacent counties of Bexar, Comal, Bandera, Kerr, Blanco and Gillespie, among others. There are almost 4,000 pharmacies in Texas and 62,000 pharmacies across the county that participate in the program and will accept the card. 

Additional savings may be in store for anyone – insured or uninsured – that use expensive brand drugs. The card comes with a unique second feature, called EquivaMeds, that helps patients find lower cost options for expensive brand name drugs and then helps them work with their personal physician to see if a change is appropriate. This online process generates a report that has been approved by physicians over 95% of the time. Thus far in 2011, EquivaMeds has identified an average $1,099 in annual savings per user.

Both features are free to users of the Kendall County discount card program.

There are neither residency requirements nor income restrictions associated with the Kendall County prescription discount card program. Anyone can use the card and there are no qualifications, limitations or lifetime maximums to worry about.

There are two ways to obtain a free BetterRxCard. Card pickup locations have been established at most county offices as well as many of the local pharmacies. The card may also be printed online at www.BetterRxCard.com/Kendall, where additional information about the BetterRxCard may be found, including card pickup locations and participating pharmacy lists.
